 Launceston Toastmasters - A Pathway to Peace and Respect

Target audience: Open to the General Public. Participants will be invited to say a few words about 'Peace and Respect', and listen to other members and guests taking part in impromptu speaking, and delivering prepared speeches. There is no cost to attend, and a free supper is served with teas and coffee.

Event Type: Launceston Toastmasters Club meets twice a month from 7pm to 9pm. On 8th August our theme is 'Peace and Respect'. Each meeting is structured to work on impromptu speaking, prepared speech projects and leadership skills. Speeches are evaluated for commendations and recommendations in an encouraging, supportive environment. Come and see how Toastmasters can help you to achieve your confidence, leadership and speaking goals.

Event Description: At this event, you will be invited to say a few words about 'Peace and Respect' and listen to other members and guests taking part in impromptu speaking, and delivering prepared speeches. How well you verbalise your thoughts and ideas, determines the impression you make on people and, ultimately, your personal success. Toastmasters will help teach you to organise, and present, your ideas logically and convincingly. We assist you to develop leadership skills and self-confidence that will enable you to handle just about any speaking situation with ease.

Event  Type: Facilitated philosophical discussion

Event Description: The Philosophy Café is a regular opportunity for members of the Launceston community to meet and discuss, in some depth, a philosophical topic of their own choosing. The Café is hosted by philosophers from the University of Tasmania as part of its commitment to ongoing intellectual engagement with the broader Tasmanian community. As part of the 2018 Tamar Peace Festival the Launceston Philosophy Café will consider some philosophical dimensions of the theme 'respect'.

Launceston Heat of the Australian Poetry Slam featuring Guest Poet Sara Mansour

Target audience: All ages welcome.

Event Type: The Launceston Heat of the Australian Poetry Slam 2018 will feature Guest Poet Sara Mansour, who is a lawyer, poet, women's rights advocate, founder and host of Sydney's Bankstown Poetry Slam and board member of NOW Australia - which aims to end sexual harassment, intimidation and abuse in the workplace.

Event Description: A Poetry Slam is where performance poetry meets competitive creativeness! It is loud, fast, fun and exciting! Up to 20 Tasmanian poets will be bringing their two-minute original work to the stage to impress the cheering, finger-clicking audience and the judges (who have been randomly selected from the audience) in the hope of winning a Place in the Tasmanian Final, and a chance to compete against Slammers from around Australia at the Sydney Opera House in October.

This year as part of the Tamar Valley Peace Festival Riverside High students will have the opportunity to do poetry workshops with Sara Mansour, a poet, lawyer and women's rights advocate, the founder and host of Bankstown Poetry Slam (BPS) in Sydney and a founding board member of NOW Australia. Inspired by the global #MeToo movement, NOW Australia is a non-profit organisation spearheaded by journalist Tracey Spicer to help end sexual harassment, intimidation and abuse in the workplace.

This is a Closed School Community Event  

For the general public, you will be able to hear Sara on the 1st of August at 6pm, Venue: Annexe Theatre, School of Creative Arts, University of Tasmania Inveresk campus, Seating is limited for this free event and bookings are essential. Refreshments will be available in the foyer from 5.30pm
